A Dynamic Probabilistic Approach to Epistemic Modality✯

چکیده

This paper develops a very simple probabilistic dynamic formalism for a semantics of epistemic modal expressions that is essentially expressivist in nature, with a notion of information states based on probability spaces. It differs from existing approaches to this task (in particular [22] and [12]) in certain features that make it more appropriate for modelling actual conversational behavior, especially as regards ignorance and unawareness. It will be argued that the latter is important for an adequate treatment of the alleged non-monotonicity of conditionals. Directions for further research that follow from the approach will be pointed out.

A Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Study of Epistemic Modality Markers in Linguistics Research Articles

Epistemic modality devices are believed to be one of the prominent characteristics of research articles as the commonly used genre among the academic community members. Considering the importance of such devices in producing and comprehending scientific discourse, this study aimed to cross–culturally and cross-linguistically investigate epistemic modality markers as an important subcategory...

Robustness-based portfolio optimization under epistemic uncertainty

In this paper, we propose formulations and algorithms for robust portfolio optimization under both aleatory uncertainty (i.e., natural variability) and epistemic uncertainty (i.e., imprecise probabilistic information) arising from interval data. Epistemic uncertainty is represented using two approaches: (1) moment bounding approach and (2) likelihood-based approach. This paper first proposes a ...

Extending probabilistic dynamic epistemic logic

This paper aims to extend in two directions the probabilistic dynamic epistemic logic provided in Kooi’s paper [7] and to relate these extensions to ones made in [10]. Kooi’s probabilistic dynamic epistemic logic adds to probabilistic epistemic logic sentences that express consequences of public announcements. The paper [10] extends [7] to using action models, but in both papers, the probabilit...

A Comparative Analysis of Epistemic and Root Modality in Two selected English Books in the Field of Applied Linguistics Written by English Native and Iranian Non-native Writers

Academic discourse has always been the focus of many linguists, especially those who have been involved with English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and discourse analysis. Persuasion, as part of rhetorical structure of academic writing, is partly achieved by employing modality markers.  Adopting a descriptive design, the present study was carried out to compare the use of modality markers in terms...

Prolegomena to General-Imaging-Based Probabilistic Dynamic Epistemic Logic

In this paper, I propose a new version of probabilistic dynamic epistemic logic (GIPDEL) that is based on general imaging, and sketch the proof of soundness and completeness of this logic. The Monty Hall dilemma is a common topic in probabilistic dynamic epistemic logic. Using product-update-rule-based probabilistic dynamic epistemic logic (PUPDEL), Kooi ([7]) supported the answer that I should...
